Tender opportunity: Design team for John Taylor & Co Bell Foundry buildings

Design team for urgent repairs & round one HLF application for John Taylor & Co Bell Foundry buildings

UK Bell Foundries [“Taylors”] are inviting tenders to provide design and related services for two phases of work:

  •  Phase 1: Managing the delivery of urgent repairs to the John Taylor & Co Bell Foundry buildings
  • Phase 2: Supporting the preparation of a round one application to the Heritage Lottery Fund [HLF] for the Taylors Bell Foundry Project

Taylors is the only purpose built bell foundry in the UK. It was built in 1859 and is one of only two remaining bell foundries in the country (the other being Whitechapel, London).

In summary, Taylors casts, tunes and finishes bells that are sold to the UK market and exported globally. Alongside this, Taylors produces all of the associated parts and mechanisms required for bells such as the frames, headstocks and wheels as well as hand-bells, carillons and bell ropes. The company installs new bells, services historic bells and undertakes related consultancy services.

The two large buildings from which Taylors operate are both Grade II* listed. They have been on the Historic England Risk Register since 2010 and are in urgent need of repair.
